"Ugh... Hojo," he muttered. He could only imagine what he would make Sephiroth eat; probably some gruel that had no taste, just all the nutritional values that a growing young man needed to survive.
"As soon as I was allowed, I took control of my own meals and never looked back," Sephiroth said. He realized now that he had likely been allowed to give him the illusion that he had choices in life. But he still appreciated having been able to eat things that actually tasted good at last.
"Can't blame you," Cloud replied, before starting to dig into his food. He let out a hum of appreciation as he swallowed; yeah, he could tell that Sephiroth had been cooking for himself for awhile now. It was really good.
Sephiroth smiled, seeing Cloud enjoyed the food. He ate as well, savoring each bite.
"Have you been discovering what kind of work is available here?" He had been told about manual labor, and he supposed that was a lot of what Cloud was doing, but he wondered if there were other options.
"Mmhmm," Cloud mumbled, before swallowing and taking a breath. "I mentioned the deliveries; being able to get transportation opens up a lot of options. And there's helping out on some farms, some businesses, that sort of thing."
He paused a moment for another mouthful of food, swallowing. "The whole point of this place is random acts of kindness, right? Gotta leave yourself open to do those acts, I guess."
"Hm. I must admit, I am not sure what I would be good at aside from military or law enforcement, or manual labor," he remarked. "There seems to be no military or police force that I can find."
And a nod. "Yes, I suppose one could find opportunities for those anywhere."
"It doesn't hurt to try new things," Cloud replied. "You don't become versatile as a mercenary if you're not willing to try some crazy jobs, even if they're not in your area of expertise."
He smirked, waving his fork at Sephiroth, teasing. "A little advice from a pro mercenary."
"Small deliveries, things I can walk back and forth, yeah," Cloud replied between mouthfuls. "But I was helping out at a farm and such as well."
He set his fork down in favor of taking a drink, setting his glass down with a contemplative look on his face.
"I... almost feel like I don't need my sword around here," he continued after a moment. "I'm... not used to it. I feel like I haven't been unarmed since before I joined SOLDIER."
"A farm? Were you planting things, or getting the ground ready for planting?" Odd to picture. He wasn't sure if that was something that would appeal to him or not. Perhaps it would be relaxing.
"I don't know whether you need it or not," Sephiroth said honestly. "I would have said No at first, but after this experience at Halloween, I don't know anymore. There may be other dangers we're not being told about." A bit of bitterness slipped into his voice at that.
"Harvesting," Cloud answered, shrugging slightly. "It wasn't that hard, mostly going through the fields with a cart and a hand scythe."
He let out a small snort at Sephiroth's reaction to mentioning Halloween, a little... touched that he was that bitter about what happened. Sephiroth that concerned of his welfare... well, it was still a little weird, after everything that was their relationship at home, but here it made him feel...
...maybe he shouldn't think too hard on it.
"I don't know; a knife was why I ended up in that situation to begin with," he replied mildly.
“Hm. I did help with a bit of that. I don’t know if I’d want to do it full-time,” he mused.
Oh, he was very bitter. He wanted to teach all those spirits what happened when he was crossed. But he knew he couldn’t do that until he knew more about them and could attack without fearing he was putting innocent lives in danger. Such a time might never come.
“I doubt all the dangers here are supernatural madmen,” he said. For surely there were others. He was fooled into thinking this place would be paradise once. He wouldn’t be fooled again.
Cloud paused at the mention of "supernatural madmen", slowly turning his attention to Sephiroth, raising an eyebrow. He didn't say anything, however; he was sure his expression said enough.
He fell quiet as he focused back on his meal, eventually finishing it off with a happy noise. He hadn't had a good meal like that in a long time.
Cloud glanced away at the smile, not sure how to feel about seeing Sephiroth smile so much. He looked... soft, when he smiled like he was. It was... nice to see, instead of those condescending smirks. After a moment he cleared his throat, standing up and reaching for Sephiroth's plate.
“You don’t have to do that,” Sephiroth said. But he didn’t object. The thought of doing something as mundane and simple as the dishes together was … pleasant.
He got up as well, taking some of the other dishes to the sink.
"It's fine," Cloud insisted, starting to scrape what food bits were left on the plates off into the garbage, before looking around to see if Sephiroth had a dishwasher, or if he had to do his dishes the hard way.
Sephiroth did not have a dishwasher. He hadn’t tried to get one since he lived alone and sometimes ate out. He didn’t mind washing some dishes by hand. He moved to start on one after Cloud had scraped it.
Sephiroth looked very peaceful as he worked. He enjoyed the simplest of things now that he was free to be able to enjoy them. And he felt he could definitely get used to this.
He dried and put some of the dishes away in the cupboard.
It didn't take long to finish, considering it was just the two of them, and it wasn't long before Cloud was wringing out the wash cloth, before leaving it to drip dry draped over the faucet. He paused a moment, before turning around to face Sephiroth, leaning against the counter.
"It's been a very pleasant day and evening," Sephiroth smiled. Figuring out how to wrap it up was a bit awkward ... and sad. He never liked saying Goodbye.

Gross.
